§ 20-113. Fire lane.

Latest version.
  • Fire lanes are hereby established as follows, in such a manner that parking of motor vehicles or other obstructions shall not interfere with the ingress and egress of fire department vehicles for the protection of persons and property. Further:

    (1)

    The marking of fire lanes on both public and private property devoted to public use shall be designated and approved by the Fire Chief, or his designee;

    (2)

    Parking of motor vehicles or otherwise obstruction of fire lanes shall be prohibited at all times;

    (3)

    Fire lanes and driveways shall be located so that all buildings served by them are accessible to fire equipment;

    (4)

    Designated fire lanes shall be marked with the proper fire lane signs. The signs shall be twelve (12) inches by eighteen (18) inches with the following printed legend: "NO PARKING FIRE LANE." Colors and lettering shall conform to the latest edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Signs shall be placed at the beginning and the end of fire lanes one hundred fifty (150) feet or less. For fire lanes between one hundred fifty (150) feet and three hundred (300) feet in length, signs shall be placed at the beginning and the end, and as close to the middle as is practical. For fire lanes in excess of three hundred (300) feet, signs shall be placed at the beginning and the end and at one-hundred-fifty-foot intervals;

    (5)

    The sign shall be mounted so that the clearance to the bottom of the sign is at least seven (7) feet or as specified in the latest edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices;

    (6)

    Designated fire lanes shall be at least twenty (20) feet wide and located no closer than ten (10) feet from any structure. Curbs shall be painted red and, if there is no curb, a four-inch stripe shall be painted on the roadway. Additional red pavement markings to delineate the width of the fire lane may be required at the discretion of the Fire Chief, or his designee;

    (7)

    Fire lanes shall not be located further than fifty (50) feet from an exterior wall of one (1) or two (2) stories; forty (40) feet if three (3) or more stories; and thirty (30) feet if over four (4) stories in height.

    (8)

    No fire lane shall be marked as such without the designation and approval of the Fire Chief, or his designee. The unauthorized designation of a fire lane on private property shall be considered a violation of this Code.
