§ 20-301. Duties of drivers involved in accidents.

  • (a)

    All drivers involved in an accident, whether with another vehicle, private or public property, a pedestrian or singly, shall:

    (1)

    Immediately bring their vehicle to a stop;

    (2)

    Render all reasonable assistance to any injured individuals, taking all reasonable steps to secure immediate medical attention for such injured person;

    (3)

    Inform the police of the occurrence and location of the accident;

    (4)

    Exchange names and addresses with the other driver (if applicable), vehicle registration numbers, license tag numbers, driver's license numbers, and the names and addresses of any passengers involved.

    (b)

    Should the accident involve an unattended vehicle on private or public property, the driver shall attempt to locate the owner, and if such owner cannot be located after a reasonable inquiry, the driver shall post notice in a conspicuous place on the vehicle or property. Such notice shall contain his name and address, his driver's license number and license tag number, and the circumstances of the accident.

    (c)

    After having complied with the appropriate above subsection, the driver may leave the scene of any accident if:

    (1)

    Released by an officer of the City Police Department; or

    (2)

    Such driver is required to make an immediate emergency run to the hospital for medical treatment of any person involved in the accident; or

    (3)

    No person is either injured or killed and the total apparent damage to any one vehicle or other property involved in the accident is less than five hundred dollars ($500.00).
